Behavior-based interviews have made a meaningful contribution to interview reliability and validity. Nevertheless, interviewer resistance to structure limits the use of this approach, and ineffective scoring can undermine its usefulness. This program will provide an overview of the foundation and core concepts of behavior-based interviewing, and an innovative approach to interview training and scoring. Participants will receive frame-of-reference training using seven stimulus videos and apply multiple scoring approaches to evaluate fictitious candidate responses. Participant responses will be compared to true-score judgments of experts, feedback will be provided, and implications of the results discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define a high-structure, behavior-based interview, its core concepts, and describe its basic administration techniques.
  • Gain an understanding of structure resistance, the reasons for it, and specific remedies to overcome it.
  • Effectively use answer-scoring benchmarks, behaviorally anchored rating scales, or competency scoring to evaluate answers to interview questions.
  • Apply innovative techniques for training, conducting, and scoring behavior-based interviews in the practice of I-O psychology.

Intended Audience:

This session is intended for a general audience of IO Psychologists at a post-graduate level; no specific content knowledge is required. However, it is expected that a substantial number of participants will have experience in conducting selection interviews.

Presenter:

Paul Green, PhD. - Dr. Green is an independent I-O practitioner with a focus on the selection interview. He earned his PhD in Industrial Organizational Psychology from the University of Memphis in 1970 and immediately pursued his goal of developing a consulting practice with a focus on individual assessments for selection/development. He conducted approximately 5,000 individual assessments and from these experiences, he developed an early version of the Behavioral Interviewing Seminar. Subsequently, he conducted over 500 seminars and speeches on Behavioral Interviewing and converted his professional practice into an interview training company known as Behavioral Technology. The company grew to 50 full-time employees with a substantial client base. As a result, Behavioral Technology was merged with 6 other training firms into Provant Inc., which was traded as “PROVANT” on the NASDAQ Exchange. Along the way, he authored 22 publications, chapters, books, and technical reports, 45 papers and presentations at professional meetings, 24 video, television and audio productions, as well as 14 training manuals. Of note, he and his colleagues developed a special purpose job analysis tool for creating structured interviews. Also, he was the Author of More than a Gut Feeling, which was described by Fortune Magazine as one of the best selling training videos of all time. In the fall of 2012, Dr. Green was recognized as one of the Outstanding Alumni of the University of Memphis. This award was based on his service as the (1) President of the Memphis Area Psychological Association, (2) Vice-president of the Instructional Systems Association, (3) member of the Tennessee Ethics Committee for Psychologists, (4) member of the West Tennessee licensure interview team, and (5) service as a Trustee for Lambuth University. Currently, Paul is on the State Affairs Committee and the Professional Practice Committees of SIOP. He also serves as an Adjunct Faculty Member for the Psychology Department at the University of Memphis and is an active supporter of the University.
