Most of the employees in healthcare possess expertise in a specific clinical discipline rather than business or management. However, it is individuals who demonstrate excellence within their clinical discipline that are often elevated to positions of leadership. This promotion often comes without any of the education, training, or mentorship that would occur in other business sectors. This workshop will focus on the uniqueness of assessing and developing this population of technical experts. It will feature experts who will share research within the industry as well as data gathered through years of combined practice. They will also share best practices and discuss challenges in working in this business sector.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the history and evolution of clinical leadership in healthcare.
  • Gain an understanding of the unique aspects of healthcare as an industry, including the implications for assessment and leadership development.
  • Discuss the impact of clinical training programs on one’s ability to be an effective leader and team member.
  • Discuss the challenge in differentiating between clinical competency and leadership capability.
  • Identify the role of environment (e.g. community, academic, practice-based) in working with clinical leaders.
  • Discuss the tension between administration/non-clinical leadership and clinical leaders.
  • Evaluate the changing needs and expectations of leaders in healthcare.
Intended Audience:

This session is intended for a general audience at a post-graduate level; no specific content knowledge is required.
