The purpose of this seminar is to discuss and share information regarding select educational sessions on research trends for I-O psychologists and HR practitioners presented at the 39th annual conference of the Society of Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP), Chicago, IL. Dr. Dave Lux will facilitate a session in which presenters will share highlights from presentations given at the annual conference and discuss implications for teaching and/or practice. The format will be an informal discussion with audience participation encouraged throughout. Handouts will be provided as appropriate in advance of, or following, the session.

Intended Audience

This seminar is intended for a general audience at a postgraduate level; no specific content knowledge is required.


Learning Objectives

Based on the content of the session, participants should be able to:

  • Highlight current research efforts and advancements in the field of I-O Psychology and related HR practices for each of the three sessions presented at this webinar.

  • Explain and discuss at least one current trend in I-O Psychology from each of the three selected sessions that are relevant to faculty members and practitioners on HR development including leadership, talent management, and people analytics.

  • Identify and critique immediate- and longer-term implications of the current trends identified from the three selected sessions on teaching and practice, including the application of these findings.

  • Identify two or three of the ideas/trends/strategies gleaned from these discussions that can and/or will be applied to one’s own current practice and/or teaching approach.

    Continuing Education (CE) Credits

    This seminar is eligible for 3.0 continuing education credits for psychologists. To qualify for these credits, the entire program must be attended. There is no partial credits available. SIOP will email CE letters 30 days after the session to the individuals who responded "Yes" to question #1 on the post-event evaluation.

    Your Presenters

    Brandon Smith, Ph.D. is a Senior Manager of Talent and Organization Development at Penske Transportation Solutions, where he leads a team responsible for director-level development strategy. He is also a part-time faculty member for the University of Georgia, teaching Talent Acquisition in the Industrial-Organizational Psychology master’s program. Brandon’s professional experience spans multiple sectors, including consulting, healthcare, federal government, and the military. His primary focus areas center around leadership development strategy, talent assessment, and leadership coaching. Brandon holds a Ph.D. in Learning, Leadership, and Organization Development and an M.A. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology, both from the University of Georgia. He is a Professional Certified Coach through the International Coaching Federation and holds certifications in multiple talent assessments, including Hogan, Korn Ferry, and EQ-i 2.0.

    Rob Stilson, Ph.D. currently serves in the role of Program Manager, Employee Listening at HP and part-time professor for the University of Georgia. Before his current role, Rob was People Analytics Principal Analyst with Boston Scientific and a Manager of People Analytics at PwC on the Workforce Transformation team. Prior to working for PwC Rob was a Sr. Human Capital Analyst with Lockheed Martin on the Employee Experience & Engagement team specializing in Employee Life Cycle Analytics and qualitative and quantitative Survey Analysis. Before joining Lockheed Martin, he was the Director, Research and Test Development for TalentQuest, providing test and simulation creation for clients along with survey and ROI analysis. Preceding TQ, he was the Senior Manager, Research and Development for FurstPerson where he created computer adaptive and static tests for various clients. Additionally, he has experience as a freelance consultant providing reporting automation and testing expertise to various clients. Dr. Stilson earned his B.S. degree in Psychology from the University of Georgia and his Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of South Florida, and he is a member of the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP), People Analytics Future of Work (PAFOW), Georgia Association for Industrial Organizational Psychology (GAIOP) and ally member of Blacks in Industrial-Organizational Psychology (BIOP).

    Becky Winkler, Ph.D. is an industrial-organizational psychologist and business consultant who works with private equity, asset management, and corporate clients to select and develop senior executives, build and strengthen leadership teams, and optimize the structure and development of the broader organization.  Now leading her own consultancy, Becky has conducted thousands of executive-level assessments and coached hundreds of leaders to breakthrough performance.  Research she conducted in collaboration with Cornell University and Teacher’s College, Columbia University, has been featured in publications such as the Washington Post, Investor’s Business Daily, Harvard Business Review, and Inc. magazine.  For ten years before launching Department 732c, Becky was a top-performing partner with boutique consulting firm Green Peak Partners.  Prior to that, she worked at Sperduto & Associates and Advocate Health Care.  Becky graduated summa cum laude with highest honors from the University of Georgia’s Honors College and earned her M.A. and Ph.D. in Industrial-Organizational Psychology from DePaul University.  She serves on UGA’s Board of Trustees and is passionate about educational equity.
